What Can Specialty Laboratory Testing Evaluate?

A single hormone result rarely tells the entire story.
Nutrition and Nutrient Status
Selected testing may evaluate vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, or other nutritional markers. These panels may be considered when a patient has symptoms or risk factors suggesting a deficiency, restricted dietary intake, absorption concerns, chronic illness, or another clinical indication.
Digestive and Gastrointestinal Health
Specialty gastrointestinal testing may examine digestion, inflammation, immune markers, microbial patterns, or other stool-based findings. Results should be interpreted cautiously and should not replace established evaluation for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, infection, or colorectal cancer.
Immune and Inflammatory Activity
Certain tests evaluate antibodies, inflammatory markers, or other aspects of immune activity. An abnormal antibody or immune result does not always prove that it is causing a patient’s symptoms.

A genetic variant may increase or decrease a particular tendency, but it does not guarantee that a disease will or will not develop. Family history, environment, lifestyle, and other biological factors remain important.

Do Normal Routine Results Mean I Need Specialty Testing?
Not necessarily.
A normal routine laboratory evaluation does not rule out every possible medical condition, but it also does not automatically mean that advanced testing is needed.
The next step depends on:
The nature and severity of your symptoms
How long the symptoms have been present
Your medical and family history
Which tests have already been completed

Are All Specialty Laboratory Tests Equally Reliable?
No. The quality of evidence, laboratory methodology, analytical performance, clinical validity, and practical usefulness can differ significantly between tests.
Some laboratory tests have received FDA clearance or authorization for a defined use. Others are laboratory-developed tests designed and performed by an individual laboratory.

How Does a Physician Select the Right Test?
